DBM Contractors recently completed demolition, excavation, site utilities and shoring at the Pike Place Market in Seattle. DBM worked with general contractor/construction manager Turner Construction Co. on the job.

The work, which was phase 1A of a multi-phase renovation to the market, included installation of a soldier pile wall with temporary and permanent tiebacks, 3,400 square feet of timber lagging, 24 soldier piles, and 39 temporary and six permanent tieback anchors. Another 40 tieback anchors were installed to support multiple top-down shotcrete walls.

Anchor piles were installed in close proximity to existing columns and buildings. Additionally, 32 micropiles were installed through existing footings and in limited overhead spaces. They were encapsulated in reinforced concrete beams and pile caps.

The project included a temporary re-route of a live 20-inch sewer pipeline to allow the existing line and manhole to be demolished. Once the new manhole and pipe were installed, the sewer flow was routed back.

The Pike Place Market renovation involves a number of code-required structural upgrades, electrical and mechanical systems improvements, new elevators and accessible public restrooms, and remodels to underperforming retail spaces.
