DBM Contractors and partner Pennine last December completed the design-build installation of the ground improvement for the state's new data center and office in Olympia. The $255 million project is under construction at 14th Avenue Southeast and Jefferson Street Southeast.

DBM installed 2,200 stone columns to improve the soils below the structural foundations and to increase the soil bearing capacity, reduce static settlement and reduce liquefaction risk. The columns reach depths of 15 to 30 feet.

General contractor Howard S. Wright Constructors is finishing up the building foundations and starting concrete wall pours this week.

When finished in September of 2011, the project will include two attached buildings — a 172,800-square-foot data center and a 130,000-square-foot office with garage — plus a separate 24,300-square-foot mechanical building. The state's Department of Information Services will occupy the data center and about 50,000 square feet of the office building. Other state agencies are expected to take the remaining office space.

FYI Properties, a nonprofit formed by the National Development Council, is the project owner. Wright Runstad & Co. is the developer.

Consultants include: NBBJ, architect; Lachel & Associates, ground improvement design; KPFF, structural engineer; and Haley and Aldrich, geotechnical engineer.
