![]() May 05, 2010 UW finishes shoring for Medical Center expansion
DBM Contractors recently finished shoring and foundation support for the University of Washington Medical Center expansion project. Crews installed 93 4-foot-diameter drilled shafts up to 70 feet below grade to support the new structure. They also installed an excavation support system made up of 131 temporary shoring piles, 82 temporary tieback anchors, steel bracing (including a temporary bridge to allow site traffic access) and 16,000 square feet of lagging. The foundations were drilled and installed prior to the mass excavation from a work pad about 20 feet above the top of the foundations. The work was completed within tight site access constraints and with equipment outfitted to satisfy the university's strict exhaust fume requirements. Skanska USA Building is the general contractor/construction manager for the eight-story hospital addition that will include a 50-bed neonatal intensive care unit, a 32-bed patient care unit, expanded diagnostic imaging, a reconfigured loading dock, and mechanical and electrical infrastructure for current and future expansion needs. There also will be shelled space for eight future operating rooms and three shelled floors for future build-out. Seattle architect NBBJ designed the 273,400-square-foot building, MKA was in charge of structural and shoring design, and Shannon & Wilson performed geotechnical work. The project is expected to be substantially complete by mid-May of 2012.
