| Safety Incentives DBM’s safety policy rewards employees for ideas, suggestions, and “doing the right thing” as well as encouraging prompt reporting of any safety concerns. The incentive program recognizes employees that go the extra mile. Employees are nominated by their peers or supervisors, and awards are given on the basis of merit each month. At the end of the year, all employees who have received monthly safety awards are also eligible for a grand prize, which is chosen randomly at our annual Holiday Party. Safety Compliance DBM monitors individual employee work habits and uses a “notice of safety violation” form to assist foremen in enforcing safe work practices. These notices are used as a tool to monitor individual employee work habits as they move from one foreman to another. If the Safety Committee sees an unsafe work habit developing, the employee will be asked to meet with the Safety Review Board to discuss the concerns. When disciplinary action is appropriate, the Safety Review Board has written guidelines, to provide a consistent mechanism to objectively hold employees accountable and determine what appropriate disciplinary action is necessary. Safety Training DBM is committed to training a safe workforce. During orientation, each new employee is issued a safety packet, which includes all corporate policies and informs each employee what is expected of him/her. Each safety packet includes a copy of “Keller’s OSHA Guide to Construction Safety”. In addition, DBM provides training throughout the year on various subjects such as: ADSC Down Hole Entry, 10 HR OSHA, Drilled Shaft Competent Person Training, First Aid/CPR, Forklift Certifications, Hazmat, Fall Protection and many other programs specific to each job site. DBM has also developed a written test for equipment operators to take prior to operation of a boom truck or crane. All DBM Supervisors have taken OSHA 10 hour Competent Person Training. Working Safely Other programs instituted by DBM to ensure constant workplace safety awareness are a daily checklist procedure called “start cards” and a stretch and flex program. The “start card” program requires that prior to the start of a shift, each foreman goes through the checklist for the daily activities, instructing crews on how to deal with the hazards that will be encountered during that shift. One of our Supervisors implemented a stretch and flex program that is currently being used on some of our projects. Although this program is relatively new, we have already experienced a reduced number of back injuries and muscle strains on projects that have put his stretch and flex program to use. | |
